Goals

Replace the old website of Solena Materials with a new, modern site offering a clear and professional experience. Showcase Solena's technology in a clear, jargon-free way that is accessible to potential clients and investors. Ensure that the new website is scalable, allowing the Solena Materials team to make edits and expand it as the company grows.

Solena Materials

Solena Materials is an Imperial College spinout using computational design, machine learning, and automation to develop a new class of synthetic protein-based fibres. The fibres are non-oil derived, biodegradable, customisable, and high-performance.

Materials

The previous website had an outdated, homemade feel - errors, an unintuitive structure, poor performance, and jargon-heavy text. It wasn’t generating leads or business opportunities.

A modern, professional site with an intuitive structure covering each area of Solena’s work. Clear, accessible text tailored to the target audience. The site has generated new business opportunities and positive feedback from investors and stakeholders.

Process

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

We started with Solena’s technology, ecosystem, and target audience - running stakeholder interviews and additional research. From this, we developed a communications strategy with key messages tailored to each audience.

From the discovery work, we mapped out the site structure around the audience’s needs and buyer journeys, then wireframed each page - focusing on layouts that were persuasive and made the most of Solena’s credibility signals. We used the Stanford Guidelines for Web Credibility to structure trust-building elements across the site.

Solena’s branding was limited to a logo, font, and a few colours. We expanded it into a full visual system - shapes, icons, and graphics that could work across the website and future marketing materials. These elements turned the wireframes into finished page designs with a clear visual hierarchy.

With designs confirmed, we built the live site on Webflow - giving Solena’s team the ability to make updates and expand the site without developer support. The build was responsive across all devices and optimised for speed and search performance.

Approach

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Low Digital Carbon Footprint

During the project, we aimed to minimise the website’s digital carbon footprint. We chose a website platform powered by sustainable energy. The website was created with cleaner and well-optimised code, which lowers digital emissions.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

We made sure that the website followed SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) best practices to ensure it can be crawled and indexed by search engines (e.g. Google or Bing). We aimed to design it in a way that takes into account the relevant ranking criteria of search engines to support search engine positioning.

Feedback-driven process

During each stage of the process, the client was be able to share feedback. This way, we ensured that the work progressed in a way that was best for the client.

Business-centric design

Our team combined their business and design backgrounds to deliver a website that doesn't just 'look good', but also matches the buyer's journey and delivers business objectives.

Onboarding & Site Handover

Following the website launch, we onboarded the team members and equipped them with the ability to modify the site. This included adding articles and publications, editing text, or making other minor modifications.

Scalability

We created the website using 'building blocks' that make it easy to modify, restructure, and expand. This way, the website can scale alongside the company's growth.

Stanford Guidelines for Web Credibility

We used the Stanford Guidelines for Web Credibility, which were developed by the Stanford University Persuasive Technology Lab. They helped ensure the site effectively communicates the company and solution.

We wanted our website to be accurate and informative, without overwhelming the reader with excessive technical information. After two suppliers failed to deliver, we approached Adopter who proved to be an excellent fit for our website needs. The process was clear, well-organised, and iterative. Adopter's team provided us with a complete solution. From key messages creation to copywriting, web design, expanding our branding, development, and onboarding our team, Adopter guided us through the work always keeping the deadlines. Overall, Adopter proved to be a trustworthy, reliable marketing partner. They'll be a great fit for other scaling green-tech and engineering biology startups needing clear and effective websites and messaging.
